Four nights in lodges, six under the stars in your rooftop tent.
The lodges sit where they make the journey better: the night before a sunrise start at Etosha, after the long road to the coast, and after the desert. The camping is where the setting is the reason to be there at all - at the foot of the granite at Spitzkoppe, inside the gates of the Namib, beside a waterhole in Etosha.
Hot showers every night, and a proper dinner always - most camps add a restaurant and a pool to cool off in after the road. In the evening, the sunset. After that, a sky you will not have seen from home.

The Waterberg plateau rises three hundred metres above the savannah, a green island of red cliffs and dense forest with walking trails threaded between them. The campsite sits in the trees at the foot of the escarpment, each pitch with its own shower and its own fire.

A working guest farm a short drive from the gates of Etosha. Relaxed, warmly run, with farm cooking served in a setting that has not changed much in decades and a pool to sit beside while the afternoon cools.

A beautiful stop in the mountains between Etosha and Spitzkoppe. The campsite was rebuilt recently and it shows: every site has its own bathroom and its own braai, set apart from the next one.

The Matterhorn of Namibia. Seven hundred million year old granite rising straight out of flat desert, famous for its red rock, its natural arch and its sunsets.

It sits on the roof of your truck and folds out in about two minutes, a ladder up to it. Inside is a full mattress, made up with proper bedding and pillows before you arrive.
You sleep above the ground with the canvas open to the night at one end, the far side unzipped to let the wind through. In this part of the world, that means waking to whatever the view happens to be. It is the reason people who have done it once want to do it again.
Every truck carries two tents and sleeps four. You share with one other person of the same gender, unless you would rather not - in which case a ground tent waits for you instead, at no extra cost.
